    2005 International Digital Art Awards

7 July to 4 September (QUT Art Museum, Gardens Point)
4 August to 4 September (Creative Industries Precinct, Kelvin Grove)

Experience the IDAA in QUT's first interactive, cross-campus exhibition. Featuring the finalists of the popular annual awards, this exhibition brings together digital fine artists with digital photographers, videographers, animators, IT and software developers and corporate advertisers. The IDAA presents an alternative, world-wide forum for digital artists, showcasing a dedicated program within a fine art context, rather than a prescribed industrial or academic platform of events. Immerse yourself in new media works at the Creative Industries Precinct (Cnr Kelvin Grove Rd and Musk Ave, Kelvin Grove) in this high-tech, multi-screen environment. Don't miss the popular showcase of prints at QUT Art Museum (Gardens Point, next to City Botanic Gardens). Showing across two campuses, with a live link, the collective value of this exhibition is something that Australian audiences are rarely able to see in one exhibition.

    A Silent Walk:
The Sculpture of Stephen Hart

4 August to 9 October

A Silent Walk explores Queensland based artist Stephen Hart’s engaging journey with sculpture and art making over the last ten years. His figurative works, carved and sculpted from hardwood and rescued timbers, have emerged in response to his question, “How can I give representation to humanity … and express the unfolding human drama in all its complexity?” Driven by his contemplation of the human condition, Hart’s whimsical and ultimately profound sculptural works grapple with universal issues including the individual’s desire to find a place in the world. His intimate and uplifting sculptures negotiate scale to great effect, providing ironic metaphors for society and extending the possibilities for sculpture.

    Somewhere in the City:
Noel McKenna

8 September to 6 November

There is often something unsettling about Noel McKenna's work, as seemingly innocent images can take on sinister overtones. Come and see a glimpse of McKenna's substantial output in an exhibition that focuses on imagery of figures in the urban environment, portrayed in paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculpture. Somewhere in the City is Sydney-based McKenna's first major exhibition in his hometown since departing twenty-five years ago. McKenna won the Art Gallery of New South Wales' Sulman Prize in 1994 and Wynne Prize in 1997, 1999 and 2001.

Selected Chinese Prints of the 20th Century:
1900-1999

27 October to 18 December

From an ancient art to the 20th Century ‘new print’ movement, this exhibition presents a powerful portrayal of Chinese life by its own artists. ‘New print’ differs from traditional prints not only in techniques, but also in artistic ideals and social implications. From day one it has been closely tied to the liberation cause of the Chinese nation and the life of the Chinese people. With a history of printmaking in China that spans over 2,000 years, this exhibition features 100 woodblock prints, screenprints, etchings and lithographs showcasing 100 years of printmaking in the People’s Republic of China. They are at once beautiful, haunting and evocative.

    David Rankin:
Then and Now (1967-2004)

10 November to 29 January 2006

David Rankin thinks of himself as a humanist, which he defines as having “a full sense of recognition of the value of the human spirit, achievement and dignity”. This exhibition endeavours to reveal the sources of his imagery, such as his perceptions of the landscape, especially deserts and his response to the unspeakable tragedies of the 20th Century.

The selected works show the breadth of Rankin’s range, both emotional and aesthetic. In honing his painterly intelligence, Rankin has roamed far in art and literary history, from ancient Chinese treatises, to Japanese haiku, to the Kabbalah. He has also roamed the world, having been inspired by the ancient stones of Jerusalem, the deserts in Mexico and his own Australian experiences.

This is a Tweed River Art Gallery Touring Exhibition and is sponsored by Jackell Pty Ltd with the financial assistance of the NSW Ministry for the Arts and Adrian Slinger Galleries.
