Els Opsomer: Shadows and Snow
Galerie Erna Hecey -
Brussels, BE Belgium

Erna Hecey is pleased to present the exhibition Shadows and Snow, the
first (solo) exhibition of Els Opsomer in the gallery. Els Opsomer
travels around the world, updating an 'urban archive' of pictures that
she keeps on expanding. The slide installation SNOW / today presented
at Galerie Erna Hécey is a result of documenting her New York, Brazil
and China sojourns. Opsomer photographs ordinary fragments of urban
reality, elements we no longer notice. They are snapshots in the margin
of an ever-changing world. In this respect, her observations bear some
resemblance to phenomena defined by anthropologist Marc Auge as
'non-lieux': places characterised by a mono-functional use, leading to
a high degree of anonymity. Examples of these 'non-places' are parking
lots, highways, motels, airports, etc. These 'non-places' deny the
specific uniqueness of a city while contributing to the likeness of all
cities. The phenomenon of mutually exchangeable cities leads to what
Rem Koolhaas has called 'the Generic City': Read Indepth Article

Artblogs - Art Blogs:

A New White Canvas
Alberto Sughi
I've just removed the painting I've been working on from the easel: a
girl with one hand on her chest holding a white sheet that partly
covers her body is peering through a half-open doorway. We don't know
what she is looking at: our only hint being her astonished and
frightened expression.
It may seem odd, but often the painter doesn't know much more about
what is going on in a painting than the spectator.
This means that everyone can come to their own conclusions and, in some
senses, complete the artist's work, which is why I often say that the
act of painting does not 'recount', but rather 'represents'; it
represents something around which the viewer constructs his/her own
story.
